The Georgia Literacy Connection Program

The Georgia Literacy Connection Program provides a mechanism by which Communities in Schools of Marietta/Cobb County (CISMCC) will expand and/or enhance services to the early elementary grades in two of our community's schools. One of the "Five CIS Basics" beliefs is that every child deserves a meaningful one-on-one relationship with a caring adult. The program will assure that the Volunteer Coordinator will recruit at least 35 volunteers who, in turn, will provide tutorial literacy help for at least 100 primary age youth (grades K-5).

Who Can Tutor?

A tutor is any individual who has the desire to open the eyes of a child through the world of books. The tutor meets with two children (each child individually) for thirty minutes a week throughout the school year. A total of one hour a week is required. An application that includes permission to obtain a background check is required.

What Happens Next?

After the application and background check has been received, the tutor will attend training classes for tutors to become familiar with the literacy materials and record keeping process. The tutors will work with the Volunteer Coordinator for CISMCC, appropriate school personnel and the assigned students. They will help the students with word attack skills, phonics, grammar and necessary skills to become an accomplished reader.
